Originally these love spoons would have been carved by suitors as a gift for their loved one. Symbols were carved on the spoon for different meanings; bells for marriage, hearts for love, a horseshoe for luck and a lock for security, among others.
Today love spoons are commonly given as wedding or anniversary gifts.
