Dolls have been in existence since prehistoric times and function both as toys and collectibles. In the 19^th century dolls had porcelain heads and their bodies were made of leather, cloth, wood or papier mâché. In the 20^th century, plastics and polymers were introduced and used instead. By the middle of the 20^th century, dolls were made from soft vinyl, especially those for children to play with (dolls were still made from other materials for adults and collectors).
